Answer box
Iron and steel goods under CBAM count direct emissions only. The one exception: indirect emissions of sintered-ore precursors carry into steel goods, because sintering ore is energy-intensive and typically grid-powered. For every other step — iron making, steel making, rolling, forging — direct emissions on-site are what count. The data points to collect: fuel use, process emissions, production tonnes per CN code, and the origin and emissions of crude steel, billets, DRI and sinter your supplier buys in.

- Welded (CN 7306).
- Fittings (CN 7307).
Fabricated and finished
- Structural steel (CN 7308).
- Fasteners (CN 7318) — see our fastener page.
- Other articles of iron or steel (CN 7326).
What to ask your supplier
- Fuel use by month and type: natural gas, coal, coke, diesel.
- Process emissions — direct non-fuel emissions from the production process.
- Production in tonnes by product and CN code.
- Precursor origin and emissions: crude steel route (BF-BOF or EAF), billets, DRI, sinter — with origin and existing emissions data where available.
- Monitoring plan version.
The sintered-ore precursor exception
For BF-BOF route steel, the indirect emissions of sinter plants carry into the steel they feed. The engine applies this automatically when the precursor is marked as sinter.
Common questions
- I import mixed grades under 7318 — how do I split by CN code? The declaration needs 8-digit CN codes. The engine splits by grade and attribution.
- My supplier is EAF — do they still need to care about sinter? Only if they buy pre-reduced iron that was made with sinter. Most pure EAF routes don’t.
- What if the supplier’s monitoring plan is for a different reporting framework? We map the data over; the EU method is applied on top.
