CBAM certificate
A tradable instrument sold to CBAM declarants. One certificate corresponds to one tonne of CO₂-equivalent of embedded emissions.
CBAM certificates are sold through the CBAM Registry starting 1 February 2027. The declarant surrenders certificates equal to the embedded emissions of goods imported, minus any carbon price paid in the country of origin and any free allocation available under the EU ETS. The price of a certificate tracks the EU ETS allowance price.
